LD Armateurs Installs Six Rotor Sails on New Airbus RoRo Vessel
French shipowner LD Armateurs has completed the mounting of six rotor sails on the newbuild roll-on/roll-off carrier Spirit of Toulouse, designated for Airbus aircraft parts transport.

French shipping company LD Armateurs has finalized the installation of six rotor sails aboard the roll-on/roll-off carrier Spirit of Toulouse. The vessel represents a newbuilding project designed specifically to support industrial supply chains. The mechanical installation equips the carrier with auxiliary wind propulsion ahead of its operational deployment.
The Spirit of Toulouse is being constructed to haul manufactured aircraft components on behalf of aerospace group Airbus. Specialized roll-on/roll-off freight capacity is central to the operational design of the ship. The integration of mechanical rotor sails provides wind-assisted thrust for these dedicated logistics movements.
Under the engineering scope, six separate cylindrical rotor structures were mounted directly onto the vessel structure. LD Armateurs oversaw the fitting process as part of the vessel construction schedule. The configuration positions the ship to harness wind energy while maintaining necessary freight space for rolling aviation cargo.
The industrial arrangement pairs LD Armateurs as maritime operator with Airbus as the cargo owner. Vessel design requirements center on the secure transit of large aviation assemblies between industrial nodes. The use of rotor sails incorporates mechanical wind propulsion directly into this dedicated maritime logistics link.
Following this installation milestone, construction continues toward final completion of the Spirit of Toulouse. Once delivered, the ship will enter commercial operations moving aircraft assemblies across the manufacturer's network. The project demonstrates the application of multiple rotor sail units to newly constructed commercial RoRo tonnage.
