Global Seaborne LNG Trade Contracts in Early 2026 Following 2025 Rebound
Global seaborne LNG shipments contracted 1.6 percent in the first seven months of 2026 after expanding to 431.9 million tonnes in 2025, according to Banchero Costa.

Geopolitical developments continue to drive structural realignments across the international liquefied natural gas shipping market. These international dynamics have shifted the origin points for seaborne cargoes and altered established maritime trade routes. Commercial shipping patterns reflect ongoing operational and geographical adjustments in response to changing supply dynamics.
Data published by shipbroking firm Banchero Costa outlines the scale of recent volume movements across the global waterborne trade. In its weekly market intelligence report, the brokerage highlighted that seaborne LNG shipments registered a solid recovery during the 2025 calendar year. That expansion marked a rebound in aggregate transport activity across major export regions.
Over the full twelve-month period of 2025, global seaborne export volumes increased by 5.8 percent compared with the previous year. Total worldwide deliveries reached 431.9 million tonnes over the course of the year. This multi-million-tonne rise reflected heightened cargo turnover and steady demand across key consumer destinations.
The pace of trade expansion moderated during the opening seven months of 2026. Banchero Costa reported that worldwide LNG exports declined by 1.6 percent year-on-year between January and July 2026. This contraction paused the upward trajectory that had characterized seaborne movements throughout the previous calendar year.
In volume terms, international export shipments totaled 241.8 million tonnes during the January to July 2026 window. This compares with 245.9 million tonnes recorded across the corresponding seven-month timeframe in 2025. The broker's figures highlight the shifting volume balances that are currently shaping maritime gas logistics.
