Malta-headquartered commodity trading house Alkagesta has officially become a corporate member of the International Bunker Industry Association. The admission reflects the company's deepening involvement in marine fuel markets, downstream supply, and decarbonisation initiatives across global maritime hubs. Through this industry affiliation, the trader plans to participate in technical committees and industry forums addressing marine fuel specifications, regulatory compliance, and low-carbon transition strategies.

The membership comes during an active operational build-out across Alkagesta's bunkering and energy trading divisions. During 2025, the group launched 0.1% ultra-low sulfur fuel oil supplies across Central and Eastern Mediterranean ports to meet regional emission control area mandates established by the International Maritime Organization. Concurrently, the trading firm established a dedicated biofuels desk in Geneva to manage low-carbon marine fuel volumes and structured transition products.

In the Asia-Pacific region, Alkagesta has expanded its bunker distribution footprint by securing dedicated oil storage capacity at the Horizon terminal in Singapore. The Asian infrastructure position supports growing physical flows of marine gasoil and residual fuel grades across major East-of-Suez trade lanes. Company representatives indicated that these logistics assets underpin their long-term strategy to serve shipowners navigating shifting regional fuel standards.

Alkagesta intends to leverage its bunkering infrastructure and structured commodity trade finance capabilities to contribute to IBIA's market development dialogues. According to marine distribution director Mithat Ciftcioglu, the association provides a venue to collaborate with peers, suppliers, and regulatory bodies on compliance frameworks and technical standards. The company will also take part in the upcoming IBIA Annual Convention scheduled to take place in Hong Kong.

Established in 2018, Alkagesta operates across 17 global offices and handles more than 7 million metric tons of commodities annually, including refined oil products, biofuels, and fertilizers. The privately held group maintains over 700,000 cubic meters of storage capacity across Europe and Asia, supported by banking facilities spanning nearly thirty international institutions. The IBIA membership solidifies the trading house's positioning within the formal marine energy supply chain.
