Alkagesta Launches Geneva Biofuels Desk to Expand Global Renewable Trading
Commodity merchant Alkagesta has established a dedicated biofuels trading desk in Geneva to serve expanding European and international low-carbon fuel markets.

Commodity trading house Alkagesta has opened a specialized biofuels desk in Geneva, expanding its commercial footprint across European and international renewable energy markets. The trading operation aims to address accelerating demand for lower-carbon energy alternatives while drawing on Geneva's established commodity trading infrastructure. The desk will focus on facilitating trade flows in sustainable fuels amid structural shifts across global energy supply chains.
The expansion comes as consumption of renewable fuels experiences steady long-term growth across Europe. Industry data from Grand View Research indicates that the European biofuels market is projected to reach approximately 59 billion dollars by 2030, supported by an average annual compound growth rate of 11 percent. Regional biodiesel trade alone is valued at 19.5 billion dollars in 2024 and is forecast by IMARC Group to exceed 32 billion dollars by 2033, while the worldwide biofuels sector is projected to surpass 200 billion dollars by 2030.
By basing the new trading unit in Geneva, Alkagesta seeks to leverage the Swiss hub's concentration of trade finance institutions, specialized legal practitioners, and risk management providers. Alkagesta Chief Executive Officer Orkhan Rustamov noted that the company intends to contribute to the clean fuel transition by collaborating with Swiss and global counterparties. The strategic location enables the trading house to integrate directly into Europe's primary commodity finance and logistics networks.
The Geneva team will work in tandem with Alkagesta's existing physical operations, including product origination, terminal storage, and regulatory compliance. Commercial activity across the desk will be aligned with European Union regulatory standards for renewable fuels. The operations will also utilize the company's established international banking relationships and structured risk controls to support physical deliveries.
Established in 2018, Alkagesta handles annual trade flows exceeding 7 million metric tonnes of physical commodities across 42 countries. The group maintains partnerships with 28 international financial institutions and has access to more than 700,000 cubic meters of liquid storage capacity across Europe and Asia. The launch of the Geneva biofuels desk marks a broader effort to expand participation in renewable and low-carbon commodity streams.
