Alkagesta Joins IBIA as Corporate Member Amid Global Expansion
Malta-based commodity trader Alkagesta has joined the International Bunker Industry Association, following recent expansions across the Mediterranean, Geneva, and Singapore.

Malta-headquartered commodity trading and bunkering firm Alkagesta has formally joined the International Bunker Industry Association as a corporate member. The company stated that the move reinforces its long-term strategic commitment to the marine fuels sector. Corporate participation within the industry body is intended to deepen the trader's direct engagement across the global bunker supply chain.
Mithat Ciftcioglu, marine distribution director at Alkagesta, described the association as an essential platform for navigating shifts in the marine energy landscape. He highlighted that the membership offers an avenue to contribute specialized expertise in structured commodities trade and supply logistics. Ciftcioglu also noted the value of collaborating with market participants focused on compliance standards and technical innovation.
The membership follows a sequence of operational expansions undertaken by Alkagesta over the course of 2025. In response to the designation of the Mediterranean Emission Control Area, the trading house rolled out plans to deliver ultra-low sulfur fuel oil across the Central and Eastern Mediterranean. That supply program was established to assist vessel operators in meeting regional environmental limits.
Beyond regional fuel oil distribution, the company also diversified into low-carbon marine solutions by launching a dedicated biofuel trading desk in Geneva. Establishing physical and derivative capabilities in Switzerland reflects increasing commercial demand for alternative drop-in bunker fuels. The desk complements the group's broader trading activities across European energy markets.
To reinforce its global logistical footprint, Alkagesta also secured strategic storage capacity at the Horizon terminal in Singapore. Positioning product within the world's primary bunkering hub provides the firm with essential physical flexibility along key East-West trade routes. Together with its European supply positions, the Singapore capacity underpins the company's expanding presence in downstream marine fuel logistics.
