Malta-headquartered trading group Alkagesta has widened its commercial portfolio in Romania to include sustainable biodiesel trading, completing initial pilot sales of EN 14214 certified FAME 01 product. The initiative aims to address transport decarbonisation requirements in Eastern Europe, where domestic fuel demand remains largely reliant on imported conventional diesel. Romania reached a 24.3% renewable share in final energy consumption in 2024, targeting 32% by 2030 under its national energy and climate plan.

Road transport accounts for nearly a quarter of Romania's total greenhouse gas emissions, creating commercial opportunities for certified alternative fuels. Alkagesta's market entry introduces supply flows structured around the European Union's updated Renewable Energy Directive (RED III) standards and International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC EU) criteria. Company leadership stated that the regional entry is designed to provide cleaner fuel volumes while strengthening Romania's role across European decarbonisation corridors.

Romania's geographical assets, including maritime access via the port of Constanta and inland transit along the Danube River, position the country as a distribution hub connecting Mediterranean, Central Asian, and European trade lanes. Alkagesta intends to integrate local infrastructure with its broader network, which encompasses more than 700,000 cubic metres of liquid storage capacity across Europe and Asia. Such vertical integration aims to optimise cargo movements, shorten delivery lead times, and reduce demurrage expenses in regional fuel markets.

The commodities trader has embedded institutional compliance systems into its local trading operations, utilising third-party risk screening platforms alongside sanctions and vessel monitoring tools. During 2024, the firm conducted due diligence on 285 vessels and 131 trading counterparties, supported by twenty on-site inspections. Alkagesta also reported a corporate Scope 1 baseline of 8,178 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent in 2024 as it prepares for compliance with the EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive.

Romania's domestic biofuel sector has historically experienced fragmented supply, with certified production concentrated among a small number of local operators such as EXPUR and Biofarm. The introduction of auditable, ISCC-certified fuel transactions is expected to support standardisation across the local trading ecosystem. Established in 2018, Alkagesta handles over 7 million metric tons of physical commodities annually across 42 countries, backed by relationships with 28 international financial institutions.
