Malta-headquartered commodity merchant Alkagesta has launched an operational hub in Singapore as part of an expansion drive across the Asia-Pacific region. The trading house, which was established in 2018, aims to use the new base to bridge physical and financial commodity flows between Europe and Asian markets. Company leadership highlighted that the move aligns with its strategy to deploy structured trade finance and strict compliance standards within major global trading centers.

Alkagesta handles more than 7 million metric tons of physical commodities annually, focusing on petroleum products, biofuels, and fertilizers. Its global footprint currently spans 17 offices and representative locations across 42 countries. To support these trade flows, the group utilizes more than 700,000 cubic meters of dedicated storage capacity positioned across strategic locations in Europe and Asia.

The merchant relies on banking partnerships with 28 international financial institutions to back its structured trade transactions, utilizing instruments such as letters of credit alongside comprehensive cargo insurance. In establishing its presence in Singapore, Alkagesta intends to replicate the risk management protocols developed in European jurisdictions. These measures incorporate counterparty due diligence, vessel screening, anti-money laundering controls, and strict adherence to international sanctions regimes.

Chief Executive Officer Orkhan Rustamov stated that establishing the Singapore entity serves as a strategic conduit linking capital and physical product flows between the Mediterranean and Asia. Board member Pierre Gay added that the expansion allows the firm to combine established risk discipline with the agility required in dynamic Asian markets. Management expects the Singapore desk to deepen relationships with regional counterparties while maintaining standardized compliance oversight across both operating theaters.

Prior to this Asian expansion, Alkagesta built its footprint in Malta, helping develop the island from a bunkering location into a broader regional trading center. The company plans to leverage that structural experience in Singapore, where substantial maritime infrastructure and deep trade finance markets support physical commodities. Singapore's position at the intersection of major Asian shipping lanes provides the trading house with expanded commercial access across regional supply chains.
