Alkagesta Establishes Geneva Biofuels Desk to Expand European Operations
The commodities trading firm has launched a dedicated biofuels trading desk in Switzerland to capture rising regional and global demand for low-carbon fuels.

Commodity trading firm Alkagesta has launched a dedicated biofuels desk based in Geneva. The new operation is designed to strengthen the company's presence across Europe while serving global energy transition markets. By establishing operations in Switzerland, the business plans to leverage Geneva's established commodity trading cluster, which integrates trade finance, risk management, legal, and logistics services.
The expansion comes amid projections of significant expansion in sustainable fuel demand across regional and global markets. European biofuel consumption is anticipated to reach approximately 59 billion dollars by 2030, supported by an estimated annual growth rate of 11 percent according to Grand View Research data. The European biodiesel sector specifically was valued at 19.5 billion dollars in 2024 and is projected by IMARC Group to exceed 32 billion dollars by 2033.
On an international scale, the broader biofuels sector stood at roughly 99.5 billion dollars in 2023 and is projected to surpass 200 billion dollars by 2030. Alkagesta aims to capture a share of this growing trade by integrating the Geneva desk directly into its established commercial network. Chief executive Orkhan Rustamov noted that the business intends to support cleaner fuel deployment in collaboration with Swiss and international trading counterparties.
The Geneva team will align its activities with the firm's existing storage, sourcing, and compliance structures. Operations are structured to follow European Union regulatory standards while utilizing Alkagesta's existing international banking relationships and risk management framework. The business expects the unit to enhance collaboration with counterparts in Switzerland, the wider European continent, and international markets.
Founded in 2018, Alkagesta manages commodity flows exceeding 7 million metric tonnes annually across operations in 42 countries. The company works with 28 international financial institutions and has access to more than 700,000 cubic meters of storage infrastructure situated across Europe and Asia. The launch of the Swiss trading hub represents the latest step in broadening its energy and commodities portfolio.
